OS X, 10.4, 10.5

»OS X, 10.4, 10.5« draws on the symbolism of Apple’s operating system connecting it with contemporary platform capitalism. At the same time, the title can be read as a reference to Generation X: start-up entrepreneurs and freelancers who laid the foundation for our current information society—and in doing so, changed the rules of capitalism. Today, digital workers like graphic freelancers or influencers no longer produce with the means of production owned by a ruling class; instead, they create content on their own computers and smartphones. Apple's operating system serves as both the central infrastructure and a status symbol for this creative class.
The installation traces Apple's design language using the UI-UX tool Sketch and points behind its glossy branding: to the asymmetry between content creators of the creative class, who have increasingly internalized neoliberal exploitation strategies, and content exploiters profiting from their labor.
